Great read. Wild what it still sold for.

Things I Do When Sick
Having COVID this weekend reminded me that there's basically two things I do when I'm sick. I've been doing these things since I was very young:
- Watch Lord of the Rings
- Watch Top Gear Vietnam Special
The Vietnam special was extra special since me and Emma are going to Vietnam for our honeymoon.
Setting Up Fresh Expo Project
This weekend I got COVID which wasn't ideal.
To kill some time and learn some stuff for work I made a little iOS app with React Native and Expo.
These were the steps I took to initialise a new project and setup some basic UI:
- Install a blank Expo project
npx create-expo-app tamagui-test --template blank
- Install all the dependencies needed for React
npx expo install react-dom react-native-web @expo/metro-runtime
- Install TypeScript
npm install --save-dev typescript @types/react @types/react-native
-
Add a
tsconfig.json
to make TypeScript work, see in repo -
Install
tamagui
which I used for all of the UI and layout, follow this guide for the extra steps in terms of setup
npm install tamagui
From this starting point I could build out an app.
I enjoyed using tamagui
as it was fairly flexible and let me change the built in components quite easily.

Game 7 Wolves#youtube.com
Minneapolis will explode if the Wolves can win this series.
The city is starved of sporting success. They need this.
Scottie#youtube.com
Green jacket, baby, arrested, shoot 66
on the day of your arrest; all in the life of Scottie Scheffler.
If he can somehow win this major it would be insane.

Club Throw Drill#youtube.com
This club throw drill is really interesting. I feel like this is a great feel for me when I hit an iron.
Alfred To Raycast#raycast.com
I put it off for too long. I finally made the switch from Alfred to Raycast.
It's faster to launch apps. I noticed that Alfred was being a bit sluggish sometimes when it opened and this is just not the case with Raycast.
I'm loving the quick links feature. This is really nice for opening certain websites that I frequently use for work (like Datadog and me&u manage) and this speeds up my workflow.
The onboarding for Raycast is brilliant. It's such a nice way to set tasks for a new user and almost gamify the experience where you want to get to 100% for the tutorial.
I know Raycast goes much deeper in terms of features and I'm excited to see what other cool things I can do with it.
Bedtime Stories#youtube.com
This product demo was so impressive but also extremely disconcerting.
The human emotions AI can now possess are getting very very good. The demo here showed how you can tweak drama and emotion of the chatbot to the way you want it.
There's a video of GPT-4o helping a student with math homework and this is super intriguing. Especially in the sense that the chatbot isn't helping you immediately solve the issue but its guiding you to a solution so you actually learn something!
The ability to screen share to AI is also awesome to help you learn how to use software. If AI knows all the features and how to achieve certain simple tasks in macOS that would be really helpful for onboarding someone with the software.
Not An iPad Review#macstories.net
Agree with many of the points here.
Of all the issues I have with iPadOS, I want to start with a relatively simple one: some apps from macOS and iOS just aren’t available on the platform.
Out of all the apps I’ve mentioned so far, I want to shine a spotlight on Files. It’s a bad product that needs a fundamental rethink from a design and performance perspective.
Jason Snell and I have widely documented these issues over the years, but especially the second one as it relates to podcasting on iPad. Jason was my source of inspiration years ago when I tried to record podcasts on my iPad Pro, and…the setup I concocted was a bit of a mess.
Furthermore, these audio restrictions are part of a broader conversation regarding iPadOS and multiple audio streams, or the lack thereof. Have you ever found yourself watching a YouTube or Twitch video on mute on your Mac while also listening to podcasts or music on the same computer? It’s nice, right?
Any respectable, modern computer – especially one from Apple – should have a fast and reliable app launcher. Spotlight for iPad, despite some minor improvements over the last few iPadOS releases, still isn’t that.
The iPad is the only Apple computer that genuinely feels made for someone like me – a person who loves modularity, freedom, and the mix of touch and keyboard interactions. I share my frustrations because I care about the platform and want it to get better. But at the same time, we need to face reality: the iPad’s operating system isn’t improving at the speed the hardware deserves – that iPad owners who spent thousands of dollars on these machines deserve.
I loved my iPad Pro but when the Mac got good again there was no point in having 2 devices for the same computer based tasks.
The iPad could be so good! It's sad that it still seems so far away.

I would love to be a faster and more accurate typist. This might be a good tool to improve.

Good to see Apple Music doing fun lists like this.
The mobile UI is pretty.

Victorian Digital Drivers License#vicroads.vic.gov.au
I found this out at work today.
Following a successful trial in Ballarat, digital driver licences will be available in May the myVicRoads app to all Victorian full licence holders. Get ready now to start using your digital licence as soon as it’s available.
Great news for those who always forget to bring their license to the bottle shop or the bar. Last cab off the rank: digital Myki for iOS.
Concussion In Footy#youtube.com
This issue has to be taken more seriously. It was a joke Jeremy Cameron was able to keep playing and clearly its because Geelong were trying to win the game.
I like what this YouTube comment says:
Forget the Hamstring comparison - the better comparison is the 'Blood Rule'. If a player hits his head against another player - or hits the ground with his head - he should be taken off. That should be ordered by the umpire - then the player comes off the ground & the doctor can make a proper assessment. Like with the blood rule or another injury - he can be properly checked. Then the doctor can decide to let him on the field again - or not
You just have to come off if you hit your head. Simple as that. If the player doesn't come off then the club should be fined or a free kick given.
Sad iPad Ad#spyglass.org
Seeing the musical instruments crushed is honestly really sad.
The messaging should be it augments creativity with these physical items not crushing them.
Text Editing On iOS#tiktok.com
Some of the text editing features I had no idea about are wild.
The 3 finger tap to access the undo and redo menu is something I'll 100% be using.
