Super Metroid

Last night I beat Mother Brain and completed Super Metroid.

It's a game I should have played years ago and sits alongside A Link to the Past as an amazing example of what the Super Nintendo was capable of.

It shows that games don't need good graphics to be timeless. This game will stand the test of time and will always be enjoyable to play.

The game progression system as you get upgrades and slowly get stronger is perfect. The way in which this opens more areas in the map is perfect.

The secret areas and hidden walls are frustrating but the satisfaction you feel when you get it done and get to the next part of the game is so good.

I've said this before but there's something about Metroidvania which I vibe with. The challenge, the general progression and the bosses; when this is done well it's such a treat for me.

The 2D pixel art in Super Metroid is beautiful. I love the usage of greens and purples. The environments are really strange but so pretty to play through.

The bosses are tough! It took me many many tries to get through Ridley, Kraid and Mother Brain. Even the Chozo Statue at the start of the game took a few tries.

What did make this much easier compared to playing the game on original hardware was save states. There would have been sections in this game I would have basically found impossible without saving at that exact point in time rather than at checkpoints.
