Tears Of The Kingdom Review

Similar to my Metroid Prime review I'm going to bang through some dot points on my thoughts from the game. The TLDR is that it's the greatest game ever made IMO.

  • Graphics are the same as Breath of the Wild (BOTW), they just doubled (and then some) the map with the depths and the sky islands
  • The depths are so fun to just roam around, you can kill monsters and collect weapons/materials, fun to slowly expand the map
  • Story is much better than BOTW, actually a fully thought out cohesive story, Zelda is a freaking dragon, was a crazy climax getting the master sword and destroying Ganondorf
  • I would have liked to see more of Ganondorf throughout the game, enjoyed the bit where you had to go to Hyrule Castle and find fake Zelda, everyone probably thinks that's the end of the game but then you have to go into the depths and unlock the final sage
  • Better shrines and puzzles in this game verses BOTW
  • In some of the shrines it's almost too easy to "cheat" with your abilities and weapons, there's a lot of different options to solve shrines and not follow the "proper" way
  • Awesome tutorial area that similar to BOTW included a snow environment that made things interesting, you had to quickly learn how to use all your materials
  • Temples were good, the Wind temple was phenomenal, going into it through the tornado in one of my favourite ever gaming experiences, Lightning and Fire temples are solid, enjoyed spending some more time in the Gerudo area, the Water temple is trash, probably the worst part of the game
  • The chores you have to do before the Water temple were also kind of frustrating and not very intuitive
  • The abilities you have are amazing, Ultrahand is the most used, Ascend and Recall are both very cool for puzzles, Fuse is great for making strong weapons which you need for the harder monsters and bosses
  • Autobuild makes it quick and easy to build vehicles to get around the map quickly
  • The world is so much richer in terms of characters, feels like there's so many more side quests and more dialog from random characters around Hyrule
  • Building up your battery is another fun challenge, need to collect lots of Zonaite to then get Crystallized Charges
  • Music was good but would have liked more, I especially enjoyed the big horns as you fall into the depths
  • Lookout Landing was a nice "go home" location that felt missing in BOTW, I often just went back there to sleep and heal before heading out for more adventures
  • Getting the master sword was super fun, was an awesome surprise element flying down onto the dragon
  • Defeating the gloom hands to get the location of the master sword felt rewarding, the gloom hands are a terrifying enemy
  • The sages are pretty useless in this game except for Tulin, getting that extra distance on glides makes a difference
  • Beating Ganondorf in the final battle definitely felt like a good challenge even with strong weapons and armour, liked the level of difficulty, would have been sad if it was too easy
