Emmas New Computer

Me and Emma have been working from home now for ~2 years.

When you work from home you ideally want to be working on a computer that makes you happy.

Unfortunately for Emma she's not been happy with her work computer for about a year. Her current job didn't provide a work computer and thus she's been using a personal 2019 Macbook Air. It's a baseline model and has an Intel chip.

The thing just plain sucks. It can barely run Google Chrome without heating up and struggles with basic work tasks like Teams meetings.

I've had a little bit of Apple credit sitting on a gift card for a while and last weekend we decided to use it to get Emma an upgrade.

We purchased a 24-inch iMac with an M1. These are the specs.

System on a chip: Apple M1
CPU: 8 cores (4 performance and 4 efficiency)
GPU: 7 cores
Memory: 8 GB
Storage: 256 TB

Emma was originally keen on the pink colour but we decided to go for the green.

I really love the colour on the back.

She's super happy with it so far. Teams meetings are now and breeze and there's no lag for day to day tasks like email and opening documents. The screen is really nice; arguably much better than my big monitor.

The Macbook Air is going into retirement. We might wipe the computer and reinstall macOS on it to see if we can clear out everything on it.

It'll become a computer that's only used when Emma's in bed watching Netflix or when she's on the go. She is currently at university doing a masters so she'll need the laptop for in person class.
