Rory's missed putts were absolutely brutal. Feel so bad for him.

Apple Image Generation#relay.fm

Listened to episode 506 of the Connected podcast today and they had an interesting conversation about Apple's new image generation technology.

This tech already exists with tools like DALL-E but what Apple is doing differently and arguably dangerously compared to these other tools is generating pictures of people in your photo library. People that you know.

I get the feeling this is going to be really bad in schools. Kids are dumb and they'll generate hurtful images of their classmates. This to me is a tool that's ripe for the picking for cyber bullying.

I personally haven't tested this product yet so I don't know how all of this plays out but I am concerned.

iPhone 15 Pro Review

On Saturday I bought an iPhone 15 Pro from my local Apple store.

I've wanted a new phone for a while and finally saved up enough money to be able to afford it.

My 15 Pro (not Max) has a 6.1 inch display with the blue titanium colour. I think it's very pretty.

I got the lowest amount of storage at 128GB. I'd love to have more storage but I just don't really need it especially given the price difference.

I paid $1578 total. The math on how this worked out was a bit weird.

I was able to price match the same phone from Officeworks which took $184 off the price. I also traded in my old iPhone XR which took a further $165 off the price.

Add on a storm blue silicone case I bought for $79 (I know that's a rip off) and we get the final price of $1578 from the original $1849. I felt like I got a decent deal.

The Apple store was honestly a really good experience. I got served quickly (within 5 minutes without an appointment) and had what I felt like was a positive interaction with the staff member.

They helped me re-enable the iCloud backup setting which I had turned off accidentally (on my old phone) and we restored the new phone. It was a quick process and when I got home all I had to do was install and sign in to some apps.

I did do one classic stuff up.

I forget that I hadn't backed up all of my two factor 6 digit codes in Google Authenticator so I had to go through the rigmarole with some services via my Mac and scan the QR codes to be able to sign in.

Anyway here are some of my initial thoughts on the phone in rapid fire:

  1. The screen is out of this world amazing, it's crisp, text and video look fantastic
  2. Apps open up super fast, things feel snappy, this is always the case with a new phone but holly crap the A17 Pro chip is a beast
  3. The speaker is shockingly loud, it's annoying Emma as I can listen to podcasts in the house louder than ever
  4. Having the extra camera lenses (0.5, 2x, 3x) to zoom in and out gives me way more flexibility, I went for a walk a few days ago and I used all the lenses at different moments, it's useful
  5. Face ID is much faster, I noticed this especially with using 1Password to sign in to web apps in Safari, there's way less lag
  6. The dynamic island is nice without being life changing, it gives you useful information at the right moments
  7. The action button is nice but I don't have anything cool assigned to it, it's currently just the boring mute/ring switcher
  8. Night mode photos seem great, they're not as nice as daylight photos in most cases but they're very usable
  9. The battery is fantastic, I've easily got 1 and a half days out of it with normal usage before needing to charge, USB-C is just a better port, it's a shame it took so long for Apple to kill the lightning port
  10. I'm thankful Apple Intelligence will work immediately with both my new phone and Mac, it would have been very annoying if my phone wasn't compatible

Flushing Irons

I'm currently pretty happy with how I'm hitting my irons.

Feel like I have a nice simple swing that's working pretty well.

My swing thought is literally keeping nice and centred and having good momentum back and forth. Almost like I'm a pendulum with my arms connected to the club.

I need to work on my chipping with my 60 degree. Hit a few bad ones today. Hitting chips from 10 - 30 metres out is so important for my game.

Hollow Knight Finished

I finished Hollow Knight last night taking down the final boss. As I've mentioned before it's a fantastic game that deserves all the praises its received. Now we wait with anticipation for Silksong. It's weird given that it was so so long ago when the trailer was dropped that the game still hasn't released. Surely development is done.

lazygit

Last night I gave a git based tool called lazygit a try.

I've been very hesitant so far in my career to try any of the GUIs for git but lazygit has piqued my interest based on its simplicity and efficient key bindings.

Committing and pushing to a remote is fast! I can change files in my text editor, use space to add files to staging and then c to bring up the commit panel. I can then write my message and press return and I'm done.

I can then easily bring up the keybindings panel for a branch and filter with ? to search through all the options.

Interactive rebasing is made easy in the commits panel with a combination of squash (s) and reword (r).

I can stash commits with a reference with s from the file panel and then pop them back in.

I can also cherry-pick commits with C and V. This might be somewhat important for work given that we occasionally need to cherry-pick for hot fixes.

I've really enjoyed learning the basics of lazygit. It's also a small shout out to a local Melbourne based developer.

Red Hill Rail Trail

Me and Emma walked the Red Hill Rail Trail today. It took us about 3 hours including lunch in Merricks.

The walk is gorgeous. Boots had one of the best days of his life. We just had to be a bit careful and get him on and off the leash when other people had their dogs leashed.

King Of The Hill

Boots is the king of the hill.

This is part of our "everything" walk where we go to the dog park (DP for Boots), river and sometimes the oval at the primary school. It's our favourite local walk.

Under 20 Handicap

I've almost broken the 20 handicap barrier for golf. I'm currently a 20.1.

Since mid 2022 I've hovered between a 20 - 23 and have struggled to have enough consistency to finally get below 20.

My last 7 stableford scores have all been above 30 points which I'm really pleased with.

I just need one more solid round and get as near as possible to 36 stableford points and it should mean I break this barrier!
