Hitting Driver Better#youtu.be

This was a great little instruction video for hitting driver.

I played at Mornington Golf Club yesterday and played poorly. Particularly hitting driver I was struggling. This is something I'd really like to work on.

My iron play is still not great but at least I can get fairly consistent contact on anything from 8 iron to pitching wedge with decent accuracy by hitting down on the ball.

The tips for hitting driver were as follows:

  1. The hover
  • Stay relaxed over the ball
  • Don't stand so wide or with shoulders tilted, just have a nice neutral stance
  • Hover the driver before you start swinging
  • Less tension through the hands and the arms
  • Grip pressure will reduce
  • First movement away will be a little bit smoother
  1. Moe Norman drill
  • We want the ball to be forward in the stance
  • Move the club along the ground so it's like a foot behind in the initial swing
  • Lowest point of golf swing behind the golf ball
  • Once you're behind the ball start your golf swing, more of a practice technique but if it works for you nothing wrong with taking it to the course
  1. Daylight for distance
  • Create as much turn in your hips until you can start to see some daylight
  • Bending the front knee
  • Getting more rotation in the hips
  • Club moves too upwards without turn in the hips, this is exactly what I do, potentially the most important drill for me to work on
  • Depth in hips means you're more likely to hit on the inside of the club face
  • Allow legs to move as a result of turn in the hips
  1. Strike drill
  • Spray coating on driver face
  • Would need to get some strike spray
  1. Attack angle drill
  • Head cover around a foot in front of golf ball
  • Goal is to ensure club head moves up and over head cover
  • If you hit head cover you get instant feedback

Another great tip is to start filming my swing more. Getting Hovey to do it the other day was good. Could also put my phone on the table in the backyard and get some decent footage.
